Yes. From a standard retail copy of XP Pro or XP Pro Upgrade. Close all
running applications, disable antivirus software, insert XP Pro CD and
follow the onscreen instructions.

One more step...before you begin, backup anything you don't want to lose.
You probably won't need the backup, but if you do, you'll be glad you have
it.

Also, do not be online until everyhting is successfully installed then make
sure your firewall is ON.

Murphy's Law and the corollaries to it make it very likely that:

1. If you don't make backups before doing the upgrade then you will
need them.

2. If you do make backups before doing the upgrade then you will not
need them.

Is there a way to upgrade from a current XP home edition to XP Pro?

Yes. The Retail Upgrade version of XP Pro will do this with no
problems, even though it is not one of the upgrade paths mentioned on
the package.

Before doing the upgrade review the information at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm to help ensure that the upgrade
goes smoothly.

And of course you should also make certain that you have an actual or
anticipated need for one of the specific features or functions that
are included in XP Pro but are not found in XP Home. Other than these
items the two versions are identical and are produced from the same
source code base. In particular there is zero difference in
performance or stability between the two versions except on a system
with dual CPUs installed on the motherboard as XP Pro will use both
CPUs whereas XP Home will use only one.

Good luck

I have a customer that has 9 PCs in a workgroup / p2p network. One PC has
the primary database on it and all others access it and also access a
broadband connection via DSL router. All of this was working fine. Over the
past few months, they have had problems where one PC could not access the
database on the 'server'. By the way, the 'server' is just another peer
running XP Home. All PCs have XP Home as a matter of fact, except one that
has XP Pro. I am trying to determine if there is some type of connection
limit going on and if upgrading the XP Home pcs to Pro will make any
difference. Any ideas?

One of the specific differences between Home and Pro is that Home will
only allow 5 concurrent logins to a shared network resource whereas
Pro will allow 10.

So with 9 PCs on the network it is likely that using Pro instead of
Home on the PC that is hosting the shared database will resolve the
problem.

Good luck
