Upgrading video card

Guest

I have a Nvidia GeForce FX Go5600 video card for my Sony Viao labtop that is
about two years old. Since it only has a memory capacity of 64 MB I want to
upgade it to a a video card that has a memory capacity of 128 or 256 MB. How
do I determine what video cards I can install on my computer?
Thanks
Tyson

Hi Tyson,

Your first step will be to contact Sony either through
their customer support number, or their website to see
which upgrade options are available for your laptop.

Unfortunately, video card upgrades on most laptops
aren't usually feasible, unless you have a laptop made
for easy upgradeability such as the Alienware lineup.

I have a rather simplistic question, but I am utterly confused because I do
not know that much when it comes to video cards. I have Windows XP with
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400, but a game I bought recently lists one of the
requirments as having, "NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS, GeForce 2 Ultra or
greater"....Will my GeForce2 MX/MX 400 be suitable, or do I need to buy a new
video card?.....If I need to buy a new card what is the least expensive card
I can buy to suit these requirments? Thank you.

Hi Eric,

Your card may not be suitable for the game if it's not meeting
the minimum requirements set by the game manufacturer,
however, you may be able to run the game just the same, with
the major disadvantage being that you won't enjoy all the eye
candy that the game has to offer. If you want to compare your
video card with other models on the market, check this list:

Thanks a lot I really appreciate the help that link a lot up for me. The
two video cards needed for the game (as according to that link) have a higher
"PP that are 4x2" instead of my video card which has a "PP that is a 2x2",
also the two video cards needed for the game have a higher bandwidth and a
higher vertex than my present video card......could you please translate this
into English for me? haha Do you think I will be able to play the game
smoothly without buying a new card? Thanks again for your help.

Hi Eric,

Good follow-up. :) The plain english translation though is that
your video card is not up to the requirements of the game, which
means that if you are able to launch and play the game with your
current video card, you will not enjoy the graphic features of the
game, and you could experience slower gameplay as well.

Bottom line: What a great reason to finally upgrade that old card! :)

If you would also like to know the definitions of all those technical
terms, a great resource is: http://whatis.techtarget.com/
