upgrading to XP Pro

What do you see if you run

winver

from Start>Run and/or right click on My Computer and select Properties? If
SP2 was already installed on the PC, I can't see why that particular error
message is appearing.

What kind of XP CD was supplied with your system?

can't see any replies in his posts.

A slight offshoot out of curiosity. If you slipstream XP Pro & SP2 on a CD,
can you then install ok?
I have a feeling that it may not work, as I my logic says it will firstly
try to install basic XP Pro, then SP2.

where I need to go ..

I have the same problem, trying to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. I'm
getting the same message, that I cannot install or upgrade because the
version of XP on the XP Home machine is newer than the version of XP on the
XP Pro disc.

To answer your question; yes, I have applied SP2 to the XP Home machine,
and the XP Pro disc is either SP1 or earlier. Is that my problem ? Will
uninstalling SP2 do any good ?

Yes, uninstalling and bringing the XP Home back to SP1 or no SP will work or
you can download SP2 and make a slipstreamed version of XP Pro SP2. With
most of today's PCs containing a CD burner and the advent of software such
as "autostreamer" building an XP Home/Pro/2k3 CD with the latest service
pack installed is a breeze.

several sites with good instructions on how to accomplish slipstreaming. As
another stated, AutoStreamer make the task easier. WARNING: you must have CD
burning software onboard which will create a bootable CD.

You don't need a bootable CD to Upgrade, or even a CD burner. Copy all the
files from your Pro CD to a folder on your HD (perferably on a separate
partition such as d:\XPPROSP2). Perform the Slipstream operation as
mentioned to integrate SP2. Run Setup from the XPPROSP2 folder you created.
Perform an Upgrade installation (not a Full Install). I've done re-installs
a few times this way. I find it's better to boot in Safe mode before running
Setup, this reduces the risk of Anti-virus software etc interfering with the
install process.
