Upgrading to XP... maybe

I am currently running an out of date version of Windows 98. I have recently began having problems with the OS. I cannot reinstall the 98 OS because it was installed on an HP, and the new motherboard is not "tatooed". Besides, I am in need of an upgrade anyway. What I want is to buy the UPGRADE version of the XP OS and format the ard drive using that. Is there an option on the new XP OS UPGRADE for a clean install? I would really like to avoid spending the $200 for the full version when all I SHOULD need is the upgrade. Please email me with any input. Thank you.

If you have a CD for 98 or ME (or 2000), then you can use the upgrade
verison of XP. it will ask you to insert the CD for the older operating
system to verify that you qualify for the $100 upgrade instead of the $200
full version. However, after that, you can still do a clean install. It is
not necessary that 98/ME/2000 be installed first.

Be sure to download and run the free Microsoft Upgrade Advisor before
upgrading. It will identify potential problem hardware and software, and
suggest some fixes.
