Upgrading to XP from 98se

As Iam about to entertain puting myself out of the comfy
chair and change to
/ upgrade to XP home from 98se - Ithought I would ask if
there are any good
sites to have recommended about going about it and
possible problems to keep
an eye on.

Best first step is go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp
and read about upgrading. In particular, check that your hardware up to
spec to meet the demands of XP. Tools/guidance available at this site.

A fresh install (reformatting everything) is best because it gives you a
clean start ... make sure to backup data you wish to keep before doing
this, of course.

Hi, Mike.

I always recommend a clean install even if it is a bit of a pain.... You
can. of course, install over the top of 98SE and, provided you are thorough
and read carefully as you go along, you should not have any serious
problems.

However, I strongly recommend disconnecting all peripherals - printer,
scanner etc - before installing, which ever method you use. It is a good
idea to visit the websites of all the programmes you use and your
peripherals, and download their latest drivers before attempting to use them
or reinstall them.

May I make a suggestion that it may be as cost effective and allow you to
use all the software you currntly are licensed to use. I would suggest at
this point, any new system purchased with XP installed is going to be
faster and better because of the newer hardware. With a very small
expenditure, you can network the old and new systems or if you want you can
use switchers to use the same keyboard; mouse and monitor to access both the
new and old system.
If you check out your options, most of the software used on 98 Se will need
to be upgraded, plus some of the hardware will need to be replaced. IN the
long run, you can have two computers networked together with one being close
to state of the moment with access from either computer to the common
resources.
