Upgrading to WinXP SP2

I had a problem with my C: drive a while back so I installed WINXP Pro SP1 on
my second hard drive D:. Now I want to format my C: drive and do a clean
install of WinXP Pro SP2. If I do this:
1) How can I be sure I will boot to the C: drive and not the D: drive after
I install the new OS?
2) Will I still be able to access the D drive to copy files (I will, of
course backup the D: drive before before I do anything drastic)?
3) If I run into a problem, will I be able to go back to my previous
configuration (i.e. boot to D: and access my applications as before)?

Thanks for any information you can give me.

1st physically disconnect D: drive when you install xp to C:.Youre pc will
boot
to the drive as set up in the BIOS,1st boot device or similiar, once youve
set the
right drive the other will not boot up to xp.
