Upgrading to windows XP stops responding

I am trying to upgrade to windows XP pro from ME. About
halfway through the "installing devices" part, it stops
responding we I retry it stops responding in the same
spot. Can you please tell my why this is happening and
what I can do.

Boot into Me. Uninstall any hardware devices and software that are not
necessary to the install of XP.(especially Anit-Virus software, sound cards,
printers, NIC's, expansion cards, etc...). Shutdown, and unplug and remove
these devices. Then restart the upgrade.
