Hi all,
i am running winnt 4 sp6 PDC on PIII 833Mhz ,1Gig Memory, Raid 5 and couple
of server applications. and we would like to upgrade to windows 2000 active
directory using the same machine.
is it simple as upgrading win98 to windows xp? and is the upgrade keep all
the permissions of all directories and shares and user accounts?

Thank you in advance

Not *really*. I would suggest you set up a "box" with NT 4.0 on it as a BDC
while connected to your existing network. After it replicates your domain
info, pull it off line, promote it to PDC then practice your upgrade on it.

This will give you a feel for the questions you will need to answer.
See:
How To: Upgrade Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server

And:
Setting Up the Domain Name System for Active Directory

When you are ready to "go live" pull a BDC off line before you start. If
things go bad, you can regain your NT 4.0 domain by adding the offline BDC
to the domain and promoting it to PDC.
