Upgrading to WD 1.1.1593.0 from WD (Beta 2)

I finally got a chance today 11-11-06 to upgrade my WD (Beta 2) to the recent
Final Version 1.1.1593.0
I downloaded WD 1593 without uninstalling WD (Beta 2 ). It was a smooth
install without any problems. WD 1593 was installed over the (Beta 2)
Version. It took only minutes to install. As of 11-11-06

WD Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine version: 1.1.1609.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1828.5

Thanks for posting this--I've wondered how that particular upgrade path
would work.

Have you checked to make sure WD Beta 2 still isn't listed in XP's
Add/Remove Programs list?

Hi History fan. WD (Beta 2) is not listed in XP'S Add/Remove Program List nor
in Windows install cleanup utility. I also have Windows Live OneCare along
with WD which complements each other nicely. Hopes this answers your question.

Downloaded new version WD. 1.1.1593.0 without uninstalling previous version
"Not a good idea" received error message uninstall previous version via add
and remove programs, uninstalled WD. 1.1.1592.0 downloaded new version
installed with no problems, maybe if you have Windows Live OneCare you can
install over
previous version, but it didn't work for me I had to use add + remove
programs.

Hi Winnipeg;

WD 1.1.1592 was not one of the Beta2 versions of Defender. It was the
first of the two Final releases, and it does require an un-install when
you're installing the Second Final release (1.1.1593) after having
previously installed the First Final release (1.1.1592). On the other
hand, it is possible to install without first removing the previous
installation *ONLY* in the event you're going from a Beta2 (1.1.1347 or
earlier) release to either one of the two versions labeled Final. I hope
that helps everyone understand this process. I don't think having WLOC at
1.1.x level has any bearing on the Defender upgrade path to Final.

I agree with Dave M. My Post was info on upgrading from WD (Beta 2) to the
recent Final Release of WD 1593. I have never installed nor mentioned
anything about WD 1592. Under downloading WD from the Microsoft.com website.
It is not necessary to uninstall WD (Beta 2) when upgrading to WD 1593.
Uninstalling WD instructions are mentioned for those upgrading from WD 1592
to WD 1593. Thanks Dave M.

Thanks everyone;

No harm done, after reading Vince post and I should of read it more
carefully, I thought I would see what happens if I don't uninstall first. I
knew that you had to uninstall the previous version before you could install
WD. 1.1.1593.0. I wanted to see if WD. would uninstall vesion 1.1.1592.0 and
then install version 1.1.1593.0, but from reading other posts I knew the
install would fail and I would have to uninstall first.

When I uninstalled previous version and downloaded new version of WD. I had
no problems installing..... defender updated definitions and ran a quick
scan. Their were 2 options I had to reset scanning time and Microsoft SpyNet
other than that their were no errors or problems updating.

WD Version > 1.1.1593.0
Eng. Version > 1.1.1609.0
Def. Version > 1.14.1828.5

But you convinced Bill Sanderson MVP and he is now mirepresenting on
every occassion by quoting or misquotng your only message. It is dangerous not to be
specific when posting because MVPs and Uncle Bill's supporters are
looking for any opportunities to misrepresent and to mis-sell M$
products.

Where have I represented this incorrectly? I'm quite clear about what Vince
posted, and about the situation when going from 1592 to 1593. I don't
recall making any posts about the upgrade process since reading Vinces post
nor have I quoted Vince in any posts.

I can't believe this....nobody said to install WD over previous version,
Engel stats this in his post dated 11/9/06. Note: If you have version
1.1.1592.0, you must first manually uninstall
Windows Defender before you can install this newer version.

Winnipeg, over installed WD to see if it would work, I knew I was going to
get an error message stating I would have to uninstall previous version
before you can even download WD Microsoft validates your machine and it stats
right their on the website you must first uninstall previous version before
you can install version 1.1.1593.0

Bill S. understood what Vince was saying Winnipeg read the post to fast and
interpreted the post incorrectly but with that said, I was aware that the
previous version would have to be uninstalled first.

There's no great problem with doing the install without removing the old
version first, even in the case of 1592 --> 1593. You get the error
message, then you remove the old version and go on. About a minute and a
half wasted.

That's what I have been trying to say in all my posts, it takes 2 seconds to
open add and remove programs... Uninstall previous and install new
version...Done!!!

Anyone who installs new version over old.. Windows will let you know you
can't do that. The only reason I did it and before everybody jumps on this
and says Internet Explorer is totally different from Windows defender" I know
" When IE. 7. finished version came out I had on my machine IE. 7/b3 and the
installer removed the old beta versions and then downloaded the finished
version of IE. 7. without me uninstalling any previous versions. I just
wanted to see if the installer would do it with Windows Defender.... I wasn't
holding my breath.

Thanks for clearing that up Bill S...

Hi Everyone. my post was for many of us that have not upgraded to the Final
Version of WD as yet and still had the WD (Beta 2) 1347. Upgrading to WD 1593
from anything other than WD (Beta 2) 1347 should have been another post so as
not to confuse us from upgrading from the (Beta 2) version. Hope this
clarifies what this post was intended to do.

And I appreciated your taking the time to do that--it is exactly what I
wanted to know about and didn't have a quick way to test on my own.

I think everyone understands this now Vince, When I upgraded WD from 1347 to
1592, I did not have to uninstall 1347, windows installer did that but when I
tried to install 1593, over 1592 windows wouldn't let me I had to first
uninstall 1592 via add + remove programs and then install WD version
1.1.1593.0

I believe this is what you were trying to get across to everyone in your
first post but like Bill S. wrote even if you install without removing
previous version " It's not a big deal" you just have to uninstall 1592 and
install 1593.
