I have the WD icon in the systray that says it has not run in 18 days now. I
have gone the route and have uninstalled it and d/l'd it again but then after
a time I am back to here again. It will run if I start it manually. Is
there any thoughts about this. Here it the info on it:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.3007.0
Definition Version: 1.23.3847.0
Product ID: 81664-827-5598053-04171

Hello John;

Are you running CCleaner or another junk cleaner on that system with the
Windows Defender cleanup enabled? Try leaving WD uncleaned if you answer
yes, cleaning it will wipe out Defenders History, and it won't remember
past scans .

No I am not running anything like that. The system hasn't been restarted in
4+days, and nothing has really changed but WD will not run by itself. I have
it set to run at 1am everyday, but it never seems to run unless I rum it
manually.

Thanks,

In that case, is your PC set to go into hibernation or into standby after a
period of inactivity? Try scheduling a quick scan to occur 5 minutes from
now while your logged on and your machine is active. That should only take
a few minutes to run, and you can thereby test the automatic scheduled
task.

Not that I know of. It is a desktop system, and up to date with WD. It
updates its self but will not scan. I have it set to run a quick scan in 20
minutes, we'll see what happens then.

Thankx

If you're still having problems, since it's usually the last of all
possible issue to guess (lol), take a look at the System Services Task
Scheduler service and make sure that service is showing both status:
Started and startup type: Automatic.

Also take a look in Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks and, if you have the
option, under Advanced > check View Hidden Tasks
Then in the Tasks panel itself, highlight and right click MP Scheduled Scan
and select Run at that point you should see the scheduled scan start up.

Dave,

I followed your steps and WD is running. But isn't that the same as going
into WD and hitting scan now??? It seems that it finished scanning but
still says that it hasn't run in 19 days now......

I reset it to run at 4.37 and it seemed to start, status on the scheduled
wnet to running for a sec and then normal again , but WD still shows that it
hasn't run in 19 days still....

I don't know what to think now....

Hello John,

After Dave M is going by the book, there are no to many doors where to knock

Could you supply some information on what your firewall is, anti-virus,

Do you have Windows Live OneCare installed?
BitTorrent,
Browser Blaster,
Download Acceleratºr,

Freedom Firewªll,
GetRight,
Norton Internet Security,
Sygate Personal Firewªll,
Zone Alarm Firewªll.

What do you see in the system event logs around the time of the scan
I believe this stuff is logged in the system event log--scan starts and
ends, definition updates, etc

Thank you.

Here's what I think, fwiw.

Your scans are running properly, but the Windows Defender UI is not being
updated correctly. You have eliminated one possibility for the cause of
this by telling us that you aren't running a registry cleaner.

You've uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Defender, correct?

My first thought would be to run a repair of Windows Defender--that has
cleared this up in the past. It would seem that wouldn't be any different
from uninstalling and reinstalling, but it doesn't take long--go to Control
Panel, add or remove programs, select Windows Defender and do change, then
update.

Hi John,

If you can, it might be useful to open the System event log, go to View,
choose Filter, and set the Source dropdown control to "WinDefend" and see
whether there are events in that log that you can relate to this issue.

If you find anything enlightening, using the cut and paste button to paste
them back here may be useful.

So--the way to dig into this:

So--right click My Computer, choose Manage.
Click on the plus sign in front of Event Viewer.
Click on the System events log, in the left column.
Click on View (top menu), filter.
Click the down-arrow at the right of Event Source, and choose "WinDefend."
Click apply, click OK.

Now--in the right window, scroll, and look for yellow-triangle or red marked
records .
Double-click a record in the right window to open it and see the full
detail. You can cut and paste, via a button--back to this thread.
