that spec is fine as it is although another 512MB of RAM would push it up to 1GB which would make it better

That is what I would like to do. At the moment there are two memory chips in the slots - both
Crucial 128MB DDR PC2700 CAS2.5 (CT1664Z335)

I want to up grade them but with what please?

Crucial 512MB DDR PC?? CAS?? (CT??)

or
Crucial 1GB DDR PC?? CAS?? (CT??)

Or another?

Please can someone confirm that it is safe to replace

x2 Crucial 128MB DDR PC2700 CAS2.5 (CT1664Z335) with
x2 Crucial 512MB DDR PC3200 CAS3 (CT6464Z40B) or
x2 Crucial 1GB DDR PC3200 CAS3 (CT12864Z40B)
or is there an alternative?

There are no PC2700 higher than 128MB as far as I can see.

Well the PC3200 won't run as fast as it could; it should still run just as effectivly as if PC2700 was in there. I dont think it would make a massive difference...

No your right , in fact it should be the same as if the stock PC2700 was being used - Spezi was just rightly saying he can use the higher rated RAM so he can take advantage of using a bigger capacity module, but warning it won't run at the higher speed :thumb:

Exactly.

It will run at 333Mhz instead of 400Mhz and the good part is if you should happen to upgrade a bit more that may come in handy or appeal to more potential buyers if you happen to decide to sell it off later as there are a lot of boards that use DDR1 PC3200. :)

Yes probably, as long as your motherboard likes them, but as Spezi says it might be better for future upgrading to go for the PC3200 now so you can take advantage of the higher speed in an upgrade later :thumb:

Oh right i see Spezi mate, i thought you meant it will make the system run slower if you were to use PC3200 on a mb that supports PC2700.

Would it be safe to upgrade to 2GB RAM rather than 1GB Ram?

The more the better generally. 2gig if you want but 1gig will still be good. :)

1.5mb ram is considered the "sweet spot" for XP, however, because "good" MBs use dual-channel mode to help ram work better, we need to use two sticks of memory ... although 1gig is quite adequate, you will see gamers opting for 2gb

Don't forget, XP will, quite easily if not curtailed somewhat, especally with all the other programs one loads up, use 500mb ram. Most people are quite happy with one gig ram with XP.
