I have been running XP Home for 2 years and started the upgrade to XP Pro
this evening. Did all thepreliminary stuff about compatibility and such and
no major problems were detected. Inserted the CD and the upgrade started.
After it did all the preliminary stuff it did a reboot and then all of a
sudden the screen and mouse "freeze up". It always happens at the same point
in the installation, during the "detecting devices" section. The screen says
approximate 34 minutes left to completion and then it stops. It always
restarts at the same point of 39 minutes left, starts the "detecting devices"
section , drops to 34 minutes and freezes. No errors or anything else.
Anyone have a similar problem or have a way to tell which device is causing
the "freeze".

Will,
Thanks for the reply but unfortunately that is not my problem. I am
trying to upgrade to WIN PRO from WIN Home and have not even looked at
service packs yet. I found that article before I posted and the article
talks about USB problems and I have no USB devices connected to the
workstation.
The basic components are as follows:
AMD 1.4g Iwill [KK266Plus-R] MB w/ VIA chipset, 20g HD, ATI
Radeon 7200 Video, Fujitsu CD-R and Iomega CD-RW, standard mouse and
keyboard, and 512Mb memory.

Try unplugging your printer if you have one.

The other thing is - how long did you leave it? I've had machines
apparently stop for 15 - 20 minutes before carrying on.

See if you can install if the Iomega is unplugged.

These are just suggestions which have helped in the past....

Cheers,

Cliff
