Windows XP freezes during install when detecting/installing devices

Hey... my Windows XP install freezes when detecting/installing
devices during installation, luckily I have dual boot going so...

How can I find out what is causing the install to freeze
setup starts fine and starts detecting devices, and
asks me about the a few devices, etc. Then it just
sits there in a loop (holding at 33 minutes left).

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

The install process just loops, I'm still in the setup phase of
windows, where it has just rebooted and it begins to install
then when it goes to detect hardware it freezes,
windows is *not installed*, it is in the process of *being installed*
still in setup.

I guess I can just go into safe mode for the setup? hmm

Try disconnecting all peripherals except keyboard , mouse and monitor.

What other operating system is installed. What are you using to create
partitions? How are your drives partitioned? Are you using a boot
manager?

Remove all but the necessary devices.. leave video card, kb and mouse,
remove sound, modem, printers, etc.. After the install, start adding
devices, one-at-a-time.

My son is having the same problem on his laptop pc. I have it here and have
been trying to reinstall Windows XP. It copies everything fine, then it
starts installing windows and stops at 35 minutes of installing devices. I
have a good windows xp disk with the service pack 2. His laptop is an older
IBM thinkpad. I don't know where to go from here because it is just sitting
here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
