Upgrading from win 98 se to xp fails.

Ok this is how it began.
I originally had 423 pentium 4 with a dfi 850chipset
motherboard with 40gb HDD Radeon 7200 vc. Everything
worked fine with xp. Then i upgraded my motherboard to a
gigabyte GA-8IHXP rev2.1. I also installed a 478 pin p4
2.26 533mhz. Now when i turned it on windows xp logo would
show then before it gets tho the login it reboots. This
does this over and over again. So i thought id start all
over and format the hardrive. Installed win 98 se.
Installed fine. Only problem is when i try to install my
ethernet card win98 will boot with message general
protection falt when loading ndis.vxd. So i do the
confermation thing when booting and hit no for ndis.vdx.
Thn 98 loads fine with the exception of my network card
not working.
So i upgrade to xp. Setup loads and prepares for
installing but when it reboots and starts installing a
message pops up.

THE SIGNATURE FOR E:\I386\NT5.CAT IS INVALID. THE EOOR
CODE IS 8009200D. NOT A CRYPTOGRAPHIC MESSAGE OR THE
CRYPTOGRAPHIC MESSAGE IS NOT FORMATTED CORRECTLY.

Andy, you don't need to install Win98 first as long as you have the 98CD.
Do a complete Scan disk of your drive.
Then format and start over. Just set to boot from the CD in the Bios.
