Upgrading from ME to XP

When upgrading to XP Home Edition, will the WinMe
restoration CD that comes from the PC manufacturer count
as a licensed copy of Windows in order to use the upgrade
version of XP. You know how when you buy a computer from
Gateway, they don't give you a genuwine Windows CD, just a
recovery CD.

It wil count if Window ME is currently installed. It's not a valid Windows
CD-ROM for the setup to see.

You dont need to have me or 98 installed to install an
upgrade of xp. after formatting your hd, if that's what u
wanna do.. run the xp install , it will ask yo for a valid
former win cd , so just insert your Me and follow
instructions..

As long as ME is installed when you upgrade, you won't need the ME CD
for proof. If you should install clean (format drive first) then you
will need qualifying proof. Your Gateway restore CD may not work in
that case.

Yeah, I was worried if XP would recognized the recovery CD
as valid. This is for a friend of mine that has ME. He's
starting to find that a lot of online programs like
iTunes.com won't work with unless its W2K or XP. I told
him to dump it and install XP, but Gateway didn't give him
an original WinME CD. I always thought that was
rediculous. It great for novices that need to install,
but what do you really have?

Problem is, restor disc is not an OS disc.

Most probably not. To be recognised there would have to be a Win9x
folder containing .cab files, such as Win_8.cab through Win_22.cab

If not, you would have to reinstate that ME and run the XP CD from it.
Change Upgrade to New Install and when it asks where, hit ESC, delete
the present partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted as next
stage - by that time the check for eligibility will have been met.

But I would do a straight upgrade - it usually goes well over ME, and
replaces the whole system while retaining installed software (apart from
one or two items).. Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at

No, an OEM Recovery or Restore CD will not be recognized by the
Upgrade Installation routine as a valid qualifying product.

The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS is installed, and,
if it finds none, it asks you to insert the installation media (CD) of
that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM "Recovery/Restore" CD will not work
for this purpose; you must have a true installation CD, complete with
the "\Win98" folder and *.cab files, or the "\i386" folder of
WinNT/2K.
