Hi - I am getting a new laptop, but it only comes with XP-Home. I will be
decommisioning my existing laptop (running Pro) after I have got all the
files off it.

1. Can I use the XPRo upgrade disks for my existing one, on the new one?
2. Will I be able to register the new one since Microsoft "know" about the
old one?
3. How does the registration scheme work - is there a hardware ID number
sent with the registration or is it just done on trust?
4. How to I de-register the old one?

Thanks

Jerry

If your Pro Upgrade (you said upgrade) is a retail version. and the existing
installation of Home on the new laptop was initially installed on that one,
then yes you can. You should remove (format) the pro version first from the
one you will be decommissioning, then you can install it on the new one.

If your Pro upgrade disk is an OEM version, then it is tied to that laptop
according to the EULA to which makes this the case in agreement. If it is
retail, and you try to activate (you do not need to register, as I am sure
you mean to activate), and it prompts you to make a call to MS with a number
the you will be given. Just explain to them what needs to be accomplished,
and they will walk you through the process. You, in absolutely no way, have
to give them your name, or any other info to do this, and that is part of
the terms MS set out for this particular process, so don't offer.

Registration is totally voluntary, and in no way improves you getting
better, or more help.

Thank you Tom for that excellant reply.
