Upgrade XP Home with OEM XP Pro?

I'm helping someone who is ordering a server from a local vendor which
will run BSD Unix. He would like to upgrade his laptop computer from XP
Home to XP Pro, and can get an OEM disk at a good price when buying the
server. (The disk will not be keyed to that particular hardware.) The
question is, will the OEM CD perform the upgrade, or would it be necessary
to wipe out the existing Home edition and start from scratch?

OEM can't upgrade - they are intended for machines in which the disk
drive(s) is/are clean. Backup any important data, boot from the XP CD and
format the drive, install the OEM Pro and reinstall any applications and
data files.

Then it might be easier then to just get the upgrade edition. (Am I
correcct in assuming that when upgrading from XP Home to Pro, it's not
necessary to reinstall all the applications and drivers??)

You need to do a clean install of pro from xp home.The oem certainly will not
have all the advantages of a retail home xp with its cd.....

An OEM CD cannot be used to perform an upgrade, it will have been
specifically designed to perform only clean installations. You should
use the retail WinXP Pro Upgrade to do this. (The retail full WinXP Pro
CD will also perform an upgrade, but why spend the extra money when
there's no need.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.

I sent you the page explaining upgrade paths for XP.. why will you not look
at it?.. the info that you supply to people is at best misleading, and at
worst totally wrong..

For the sake of the people you try to help, read up on this stuff before
typing out any more replies..
