Does anyone have a methodology for doing this?
i.e. what should be backed-up, what apps, if any, will need re-installing
etc.?
Can I just install XP or does 2K need to be uninstalled first?
Are there any pages/Kb articles etc. that I can refer to?

from my experience, the best way to do this is to backup only documents,
music, videos, pictures etc that you want to keep. back these up to a
separate hard disk if possible or create an extended partion on your drive
and copy them to it. then install XP, making sure you format your existing
win2k in the process. this will give you nice clean install with no
problems, only drawback is you will have to reinstall all your programs

Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm
This is primarily aimed at Win9x users, but is worth while nevertheless
in giving a good idea of things you should have removed before
upgrading. Suites like Norton, AV and CD burning are the main ones..

Then the actual process is simply one of running the XP Pro Upgrade CD
from the present system, starting Install, and continuing with Upgrade.

And once done, I suggest simplifying the visual effects. Resist the
urge to go back to the classic style altogether until you have given the
XP one a fair chance, but in Control Panel - System - Advanced - in
Performance click Settings and take Custom - uncheck the top ten boxes
of sheer eye-candy
