Upgraded workstation from W2k to XP shares fail

The upgrade took place with XP SP1 unfortunatly it was
attached to the server and after 2 failed attempts to
install SP2 I realized that SP2 had to be applied before
the machine received any security updates or it would
install, but the OS would not work properly. (after SP2
installed, clicking run would create a shortcut,
clicking IE would create a shortcut nothing would run)
The moral here is always use an OS with the latest SP,
if not at least disconnect from the network!

After finally installing and getting all working, the
upgraded machine would not allow any access to shared
folders. Spent 2 hours trying to track this down. I
renamed the machine, connected and disconnect to the
network. I even removed it from the 2003 server and
reconnected. I even recreated the shares in XP. Shares
could be seen, but access was denied, to any user
(including administrator) on any machine. Printer shares
were available.

Upgrade installations are inherently more iffy than clean installs. When
they fail, even a little bit, revert to the tried & true Clean Install.
(Actually, I don't do OS upgrades anymore. Not worth the almost guaranteed
waste of time. They're *never* as solid as clean installs.)

When installing XP using a disk that isn't already SP2, it's wise to
"slipstream" SP2.

In some office situations, the workers want an exact
replacement of their prior OS. Amazingly, except for
some minor issues the 2k->XP upgrade is relatively easy.
The problem came from trying to get SP2 installed before
the 2003 Server started downloading updates thru WSUS.

The Shares turned out to be a firewall issue. When XP
upgrades it turns the TCP port for shares OFF. I hope
that is not WAD definitely WEIRD.
