Upgraded to XP and now IE freezes my system

I recently upgraded to Windows XP and now IE causes my system to freeze. It seems to be happening when I have more than one IE window open. When I close one of the multiple windows, everything stops working and the system just sits there. I have tried letting it sit for over an hour and nothing happens, I tried a ctrl alt del to attempt to close the other windows and that does not bring up the task manager even. This happens even when I'm only using two IE windows. Before the upgrade I could have probably 15 IE windows open without a problem

Any suggestions are appreciated

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
