IE freezes and "Restore Down"

Hi all, in the last few months I have noticed my browser (IE 6) will
occasionally freeze on a web page. Usually this freeze will last 15-30
seconds, but sometimes in will lock up IE. My laptop doesn't freeze so
I can usually just wait out the freeze or kill the process and then
restart IE.

Symptoms are:
- the "Restore Down" button (middle button in upper right of IE) will
become greyed-out. I can minimize the browser, then click on it in the
toolbar to bring IE back up, but the screen is still frozen.
- the freeze will usually be on a GIF, JPG, etc, advertising. I can
see in the status that IE is trying to load something, but it just sits
there.
- it's not consistently on the same sites. I have found it on ESPN and
Travelocity, but not on small "home-grown" websites.
- I THINK all the frozen pages are stuck on ActiveX controls, but I'm
not sure.

Any thoughts?

Windows Version?
IE version?
Are you up to date at Windows Update?
Is there a yellow bar under the toolbar?

I've got:
Windows XP Professional, 2002, SP2
IE 6.0.2900

I'm up-to-date with Windows Update (just updated again today). No
yellow bar (pop-up blocker) appears. Also, I just installed and ran
Windows Defender (Beta 2) and got rin of a bit of spyware.

It appears to hang on ActiveX sections in the webpages. For example
the current Travelocity page freezes for me and the part that is
"waiting" to load is the ActiveX portion (a friend loaded the page to
see the missing portion). I'll have to check other pages and note what
specifically seems to not load.

Your IE is apparently blocking ActiveX, but it should show the yellow
Information Bar allowing you to let it run. Unfortunately, I can't figure
out where to turn that on and off. Hopefully someone else will jump in.

Hi Colin,
To make the Information Bar to Prompt you for any ActiveX would like to Run
do the Following:
Open IE Properties and Select Secuirty Tab and Highlight the Internet Icon
in the Zone ( ie the internet, Intranet, Trusted Site, Restricted Sites).
Anclick on the Custom Level there on the Window Locate the Header:
ActiveX Controls and Plug-Ins (it is the first option)
[ ] Automatic Prompting for ActoveX Controls.
o Disable
o Enable
Please select Disable to let the info bar alert you.
Scroll down and look for the Following:
Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls.
Set it to Disable option.
Then go to the Privacy Tab and Look in the Bottom of the Window and Click on
the Pop-Up Blocker Settings Button and there be sure you select Both:
[ ] Play sound when Pop-up is blocked.
[ ] Show Information Bar when Pop-Up is Blocked.
Click Ok to exit.
Close the IE and Hope this will Show you the Alert and Info Bar on the Top
of your Screen.
Regards
nass
