My computer has Microsoft Work Suite 2001. I am
considering buying the 2004 edition. Do I need to do
this or do the updates we receive online update

Just like most products that have versions like that (Office 95, 97, 2000,
XP, 2003 -- Windows 95, 95 OSR2, 98, 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, XP, NT Server, 2000
Server, 2003 Server, etc...) you have to purchase the new product.

You may want to wait. Works Suite 2005 is coming out
sometime in August or September. Also their is a Works
Newsgroup for Works and Worsk Suite questions. Its under
the Home Productivity Newsgroup.
