Hi all,
I was not sure where to post. Hope this aok. I upgraded to Vista Home
Premium 64bit, from Windows XP Home 32bit after rebuilding my system(AMD Quad
core now). The change over went fine with the exception of the back-up which
is a whole other issue. Since I no longer require the Windows XP Home 32bit
version, I wanted to give or sell it for a dollar to a friend with a hacked
version on his. Will he need to buy a new key and liscence? Is this ok since
I replaced the older Windows with the newer Windows and is no longer on my
harddrive? I have a feeling that he should just avoid the hassle and just buy
a new copy from a local merchant and be done with it. Am I allowed to
transfer the software and all(liscence, cd key, etc.) to my friend since I no
longer have anything to do with the Windows XP version with my new machine?
I'm not even sure if it will work, I mean MS will allow him to register that
cd key or not. Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks,
Troy Lawson

Was your Vista a full retail version or an upgrade version? If an
upgrade, you have to keep your XP. It and the upgrade version of
Vista are tied together... that's the reason for the lower price on
Vista.

If it was a full retail version, you are free to do whatever you like
with XP.

I agree, that's been a point of a lot of discussion on these groups that
people toss XP or 98 out and then try to re-install and can't because
upgrade CD's demand to see an older copy of an OS to upgrade. OOPS!.

Also if your OS is an OEM like DELL or HP etc, it might not work on
another system. Some OEM CD's are tied to the actual motherboard and
won't load on a scratch built system or another vendor system.

I upgraded to full blown retail Vista Home Premium which came with 32-bit(So
why was it premium...lol) and ordered the 64-bit version and had to wait for
about a month to come. So it didn't matter if I had the XP version. It still
installed after a format. I realized the XP was an upgrade version from my
full Windows 98 version So my friend would be better off to just grit his
teeth and pay for a full retail version of Vista. Or so I think. I also think
he is on his own as far as the backed-up data with his hacked version of
Vista. The Genuine Vista wont recognize the hacked Vista data back-up and he
will loose this data, or am I just worried for nothing? Any insight would be
great even from a mod maybe...Thanks
