I bought a laptop with XP home on it but have XP Pro with some license
left on a volume license. Is there some way to upgrade the Home
installation to Pro without doing a clean install? The method of
upgrading I usrd to use, boot from CD and install, doesn't have the
option of installing Pro over Home.

Try running the upgrade from within XP.

You should be aware that some laptops have problems with upgrades especially
if the "upgrade" is not bought from the Laptop manufacturer. There may be a
problem with drivers for that laptop.

You should also be aware that the best way to deal with changing from Home
to Pro is to do an upgrade and leave all the drivers in place.

You might want to check with the manufacturer's website for drivers for your
laptop for XP Pro.

At least this will give you a clue if it can be done. If they have drivers
it'll probably work. I would download the drivers before starting the
upgrade just in case.

Launch Windows XP Home Edition and when you reach
the Desktop, insert the XP Pro CD in the CD drive. You
will then see an option to "Upgrade".

That's what I'm trying to do. I haven't ried from within XP Home so I
suppose I could try that.
