Upgrade woes (shut down)

i just upgraded my computer, but am having some woes. the machine won't
shut down when instructed. instead, it does a reboot...every time.

the specs are:

AMD 64 4200
1 gig ram
WD 80 gig IDE HD
Maxtor 300 gig SATA HD (data only)
Sony IDE DVD/CD
ECS nforce4m-a MB (fry's giveaway)
nvidia geforce 7300 GS video (PCI-E)
Echo mia 24/96 sound card
Conexant modem

Windows XP Pro with all updates as of today

i may have an acpi problem, but i can't disable it all together in the
bios. i will need to so i can use my recording software eventually, so
i have a question into the manufacturer (ECS). i disabled the reboot
option for errors, but that did nothing. when i reboot, there are no
error messages in the event manager anyway.

the only software installed othe than windows is firefox, and office.
the problem started before those were installed though.

i disabled the floppy, so i don't know if that would have anything to
do with it. i don't see how.

i guess i could redo the whole thing one item at a time, but that seems
ridiculous. does anyone have any suggestions???

thanks,
dm

ECS = reset CMOS whenever there is a weird anomaly. Also look for a
driver/bios update from ECS

dm--this may not be relevant for you but a poster named "Mox" at some
soundcard forum suggested:

"Enter BIOS then go to Power Management Setup.
Check the Soft-Off by PWRBTN. If this is set to Delay 4 Sec, try switching
it to Instant Off.
Check PWRON After PWR-FAIL. If this is set to On, try switching to Off."

Thats usually because you dont have the ACPI setup in the bios
properly when you install XP. And you cant change it later, you need
to put it in the correct state and do a repair install of XP to fix that.
the specs are:

AMD 64 4200
1 gig ram
WD 80 gig IDE HD
Maxtor 300 gig SATA HD (data only)
Sony IDE DVD/CD
ECS nforce4m-a MB (fry's giveaway)

Thats normal, XP isnt in control when it reboots, the bios is,
so you wont see anything in the event manager in that situation.

Yeah, its a classic XP install problem.
i disabled the floppy, so i don't know if that
would have anything to do with it. i don't see how.

Nar, its nor relevant.

Just put the acpi in the correct state in the bios whatever
that takes including resetting the cmos and then do a
repair install of XP so that its handled properly in XP.
