Upgrade Win XP Home to Windows XP Pro

I have Windows XP Home Edition with SP1 installed on my
computer right now. I have a Windows XP Pro Full Edition
CD that I want to use to upgrade my XP Home. Has anyone
tried to upgrade like this before and if so, did you have
any problems? I don't really want to format and do a clean
install, but I was just wondering if this would work with
no problems.

I'm not sure if the XP Pro CD includes SP1 or not...is
there a way to check that? I got the CD through a program
at my college so I'm not sure which version it is.

If it were an MS CD, it would say whether it had SP1 or not.

From your college, you don't know.

I'd say, back up your critical data and give it a try. Be sure to start the
install
from your existing Windows system. If you get the option to upgrade, you're
probably OK.

Be sure to reapply all Critical Updates from WindowsUpdate before you plug
back in to your college network.

I actually got the CD through a Microsoft program that is
set up with my school, so the CD is an official Microsoft
CD. But I don't see anywhere on the CD or anything that
says it includes SP1. Also, when I enter the setup screen,
it does give an option to upgrade.

Provided it is a retail Pro CD and not an OEM one 'for supply only with
a new machine' (those will only do a clean install)

Run the Pro CD *from* the Home system - take Install, continue with
Upgrade. Unless the Pro CD has Service PAck 1 included, you will be
back to square one on updates and must start with that; and then in any
case continue with the recent roll-up update Q 826983 and the IE roll up
Q 824145. Make sure you have the firewall still enabled before
connecting to the internet *at all* or you will be hit by BLAST or one
of its friends in a couple of minutes

I did the update and it worked fine...I just had to
reinstall SP1 and all the other Windows updates after the
upgrade.
