I currently have Mellinium and want to upgrade to XP.
Recommendations if this is a good move and ideas on the
best way to do it?

Drew,

A pc with Millennium has less/fewer system requirements than XP. For
example, XP requires 128MB RAM and 300MHz processor. There is a tool you can
download from Microsoft that will check your system and tell you any issues,
including any problems with software that you have and your drivers. Go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp

for upgrade information.

Also, if you take your system to CompUSA, and buy your XP upgrade from them,
they will install it for free. Which is very nice, because if you run into
any driver problems they can resolve them. For example, if you need to
upgrade your modem, they can pop in a new one right away. Again you only pay
for the modem and they install it for free. In particular, you might want to
upgrade the memory to at least 256MB.

I don't work for CompUSA, but it takes the hassle out of it. Cheers.

Bob.

It depends what you're trying to accomplish. If you run the upgrade advisor
and it tells you all is well, and you have 512 MB of memory, it may be worth
considering. Less memory, or no need for things in XP that are new, I don't
necessarily think it's worth the bother and expense. If your machine's not
running right, a clean install of ME and then taking care of it would be as
likely to fix it as trying to go to XP to fix it. There are good things
about the upgrade, and there are annoyances, so it's not a clearly "great"
move IMO. New machine, XP, great...older machine, not always worth it.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

My view is that you're going about this backward. A change of
operating system should be driven by need, not just because there
is a new version available. Are you having a problem with Windows
98 that you expect XP to solve? Do you have or expect to get new
hardware or software that is supported in XP, but not in 98? Is
there some new feature in XP that you need or yearn for? Does
your job require you have skills in XP? Are you a computer
hobbyist who enjoys playing with whatever is newest?

If the answer to one or more of those questions is yes, then you
should get XP. Otherwise most people should stick with what they
have.

Also, if you do decide to upgrade, post your hardware
configuration here to get opinions on whether it's adequate for
XP.

If you have a CPU of at least 500MHz and 256MB or more RAM, with 4GB say
of disk space free, then it is quite a good thing. Do not try it if you
only have 128MB, even though that is the 'recommended' level.

To do it you need the XP Upgrade CD (Home edition should be all you
need). Make sure you uninstall (not merely disable) any Antivirus;
System Utilities like Norton; and CD burning software - get and install
XP compatible versions as necessary afterwards. Read Gary Woodruff's
article on upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Then run the XP CD from the ME system; take Install; continue with
Upgrade
