Upgrade to XP SP1 using Repair Console?

B

Brian Wescombe

A friend has the non-SP1 version of Windows XP Pro installed. Is it possible
to upgrade to SP1 using the Repair console and my bootable XP Pro CD which
has SP1 already included?
Or could I use my Integrated SP1 CD to do an Upgrade install without messing
things up?

The best method to install SP1 is to
visit http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
and select "Network Installation", download SP1a to a new folder, then install.

or

Order the Free Microsoft Windows Security Update CD
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/cd/order.mspx

I know that's the best way, but can the way I suggested be used? My friend's
PC has limited disk space for storing/extracting the SP1 files.

Then your friend should set about correcting that first. Doesn't matter how
he installs SP1 (the express install is actuall the smallest footprint, it
excludes updates that are already installed), he will need the free space
for defragging operations, and for temp and pagefile expansion.

To answer your question: No.

No, download the Express version and install it via Internet. This
will get round the disk space problem. Its slower but it will work.
