I cannot upgrade from XP home edition (SP2) to XP pro (sp1) edition. What do

How are you trying to upgrade? Are you using an Upgrade version PRO CD?
Is there an error message?
Slipstream the PRO CD to SP2. This is *easy* to do with Autostreamer and
the full SP2 download from MS.

You need to use XP Pro that includes SP2, you can use your SP1 version of XP
to create a slipstreamed CD to solve this problem.
I Use AutoStreamer, it easy to use and for the most part self explanatory,
just download a copy of SP2 from Microsoft before you begin as this will be
needed to create the CD. You will also need CD burning software such a Nero
or Easy CD Creator to take the .ISO file created by AutoStreamer and use it
(the ISO file) to create an XP SP2 installation CD.

Going from SP2 to SP1 is considered a downgrade, so you can't do this
directly.

You have two choices:
1. Uninstall SP2 (if it was separately installed), do the upgrade, then
reinstall SP2.
2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including SP2, and use

In the auto streamer program, it asked for the location of the sp2 file.
Since my home edition is upgraded to sp2. I looked for that file as shown in
the example called winxpspf2_EN_RC2.exe. this file was not found. Should I
specify a different file name? I am using version 5.1 (Build
2006.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519: service pack 2)

You need to download a standalone version of the SP2 file and place that in
a folder of your choice (example folder name: SP2)
Then tell AutoStreamer where the folder 'SP2' is located.
The file name that you will download to this folder is:
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

Nero, Roxio Easy CD Creator or maybe there is a freeware/shareware utility.
I did a quick search but could not find something I could recommend in the
way of freeware.

I have the iso file burned to a CD but my computer will not open the file.

xp.iso file to the CD but you want the software you are using to create the
CD using the ISO file as a source (to extract the files from) as it burns
what is contained in the ISO file to the CD.
If you did it wrong then you will only see a single file on the CD with a
..iso extension, if you do it correctly then you will have a bootable Windows
XP CD which will have multiple files and folders when viewed with explorer.

I have tried this with AP burner Pro and now nero 7 with no success. The cd
that I have burned is an iso file that cannot be read for the purposes of the
upgrade. Do you know how to use Nero to instruct it to do as you described?
Is there a particular setting I should be aware of to make this happen?

You open Nero Burning Rom. On the toolbar click on recorder. Then click on
burn image. Select the ISO file. Make sure you have a disk in your burner.
Click burn.
