It is hardly ever necessary for anyone. Under the hood, Windows
2000 is Windows NT 5.0 and Windows XP is Windows NT 5.1. So
Windows XP is a relatively minor update to 2000, rather than
something completely new and different.
Nevertheless there *are* new features and improvements in it.
Whether you find them worth the cost and effort of upgrading,
only you can answer. But in general, I think that for most people
operating system upgrades should be driven by need; when there is
something in the new operating system that you need or crave,
that's the time to do an upgrade--not before.
What softwares
do I need to upgrade presently installed on my windows
2000 computer in order for it to work on my windows XP
later?
Since you didn't tell us what software you have installed, nobody
can answer that question for you, but in general, almost
everything that works under WIndows 2000 will also work under
Windows XP.
