upgrade question winme to winxp

I have an IBM pc that came with a windows me recovery cd. can I upgrade it
to windows xp? and if so, one day when I am no longer using that IBM pc,
can I then use that windows xp on another computer?

or should I just buy a non-upgrade version of windows xp?

I think you should just buy the full version because I don't think that
the upgrade version will accept your Recovery Disk as qualifying media.

the upgrade version will accept your Recovery Disk as qualifying media.

You can always restore with the recovery disk, and run the upgrade CD
from it. Either to Upgrade, or to change to New Install. If there,
when it asks where to install, you hit ESC you can select and delete the
current partition, and make a new RAW one to be formatted next stage.
By that time the eligibility check has been made. So that is enough for
the present machine, if that is an adequate one for XP anyway

But it will not be possible to install the recovery disk on a successor
machine, nor would it be legitimate to install such an OEM one there
anyway, so you would need some other 'evidence' in support of the
upgrade license - a cut price retail win98 CD would do
