I have a laptop with XP Home, but XP Pro is required on my network
domain. Do I need to purchase the full XP Pro version, or can I get
the desried results with the Upgrade version?

1. Purchase the conventional "retail upgrade version" of Windows XP Pro.
2. Uninstall any third-party antivirus or firewall programs.
3. Disconnect all peripheral hardware devices, but not the monitor, keyboard or mouse.
4. While at your Windows XP Home desktop screen, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the CD drive.
5. Select the default "Upgrade" option....do not select "New Installation".
6. Defrag your drive after upgrading.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program & turn-on the firewall.
8. Visit the Windows Update website and download the necessary updates.
9. Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your laptop to download
any additional drivers required for Windows XP.

Buy the upgrade but note.... Most laptop computers are proprietary
in nature so you might want to check with the maker of your laptop and
see if you can purchase the Pro upgrade from them rather than buy an
off the shelf version.

Meaning.....compatibility issues in software and drivers? Or....? Can
you explain the proprietary portion of your response, please?
Thanks

Most laptop computers require specific drivers for their hardware.
(hard drive, CD drive, touchpad, video, sound, power saving features,
etc.)

Proprietary here means that you would have to ensure you could
download all the necessary drivers needed for the hardware that your
laptop has installed. The OEM version of XP Home that came
preinstalled on your laptop included those drivers.

Another consideration is whether or not you would void any warranty
that you have on the machine if you were to install an off the shelf
version of XP Pro.

I considered installing Pro on my Toshiba laptop which is fairly new,
however, there are too many issues with downloading drivers and the
warranty. Purchasing Pro from Toshiba is easier but a lot more
expensive. Have fun and regards.

Although the box does not mention XP Home, the Upgrade version will
upgrade Home to Pro
Just run it fro the existing system, enter Install, continue with
Upgrade
