Upgrade from Windows 2000 Pro OEM to Windows XP Pro

Edwin

If anyone know if I can purchase a Windows XP Pro Upgrade version and
installed on a Windows 2000 OEM version? Or should I purchase a Full
package of Windows XP Pro in this OEM situation?

Thanks.

An upgrade to XP Pro will work.
Just incase you ever need to format your drive you need to make sure you
still have your 2000 CD. If you don't I'd get a retail XP pro package

Only thing I concern is the licensing issue. Does the OEM license allow
me to do a version upgrade? Thanks.

If you've got 2000 running without problems - stay with it! WinXPsp2 is
just the same as Win2000 except for a redesigned desktop and a whole pile of
bloated security code.

Stick with 2000 and upgrade to Vista and you'll be glad you accept my
advice.

An Upgrade version of XP Pro will upgrade an OEM version of Windows 2000
or XP Home OEM. It doesn't matter if the qualifying product is OEM or
not. Either Win2000 needs to be installed or insert the Win2000
installation CD when asked.

If Windows 2000 is good enough, then there is no good reason
to even consider upgrading to Vista. The resource requirements
for Vista are more severe than for Windows XP and the resulting
performance hit with hardware that is 2 generations behind the
times will be obvious.

You're right. I should have said to stick with w2k until the motherboard
blows then but a new machine with Vista already up and running.

Certainly. Why wouldn't it?

Yes, of course. The specific type (OEM vs. retail) of license for the
qualifying product is irrelevant, as long as you have a legitimate
license. (In this case, that would mean that your OEM Win2K license has
never been installed on any other computer, as OEM licenses are
permanently bound to the first computer on which they're installed.)

Or should I purchase a Full
package of Windows XP Pro in this OEM situation?

Only if you want to spend money unnecessarily.

Sorry, spelling mistake, that should read -

Thanks you guys for all your inputs! I understand that technically I
can install XP upgrade version over an OEM Windows 2000. But in the
licensing points of view, does it allow? Since I heard that OEM is a
pretty restricted license.

Good discussion! Thanks again.

Yes, as several of us have said. It doesn't matter if it's OEM. The
license allows for an upgrade from an OEM copy.
