Yes, it does. One word of caution, though. If there are programs or
hardware you simply can't live without, check with the company which
produced the items to make sure it will work with XP. Most will but some
won't so it's best to check BEFORE committing yourself. At the very least,
you may have to get XP drivers for some of the hardware (scanner, Webcam,
oddball sound card) so get those from the manufacturer's Website before
upgrading as well. If you don't see an XP driver on the Website, DON'T
assume the 98 driver will work! Ask.
I just wanted to follow up with what Tom said. Everything he said is
correct and I can't stress enough to pay attention to the compatibility
report when it runs. Windows XP Pro comes in an Upgrade version and Full
version. The Full version can upgrade as well as do clean installations
(without a previous Windows version), where the upgrade edition cannot. You
can find more info about the different versions of XP at:
You have the choice of doing an Update which will replace the 98, though
retaining installed software; of doing a reformat and totally clean
install; or of using third party software (probably) to make a second
partition on the disk, and having XP in that with a 'dual boot' to
either system. Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm
