Upgrade Installation Problems

When I start my XP upgrade from Windows 98SE, I get an
error message saying that I am running Norton Anti-Virus.
I have disabled Norton, checked and double checked this,
but still get the error message.

Since my Norton is part of the installation package that
came with my computer, if I uninstall it, upgrade to XP
and then go back to the installation package it will
reinstall Windows 98SE.

Is there any way around this without buying a new copy of
Norton to install after my upgrade?

If you have the Norton anti virus program on a disk supplied with the computer you should be able to reinstall it. Usually you can install XP when an anti virus program is turned off. If you can't, I would remove the program using the add and remove programs program in the control panel. Xp should then install. Make sure you can locate the Norton Anti Virus program on the computer system disk before you uninstall it, so it can be reloaded. If you can't find it, you will have to get another anti virus program.

Personally I quit running the anti virus program, as I still got viruses in between upgrading virus codes. If I get a virus now. I do an online scan using one of the free checkers. The checker will identify the virus, then I download the removal tool also found on the internet free, to remove the virus. It's probably better to run the anti virus program, IF you upgrade the virus definition codes from the anti virus company VERY FREQUENTLY! At Least WEEKLY Good Luck !! tcraft

Do you have a current running subscription with them to
download virus definitions. If so, I would contact them
to see about getting the program. Tell them your problem.

If you don't have a subscription, then I wouldn't worry
about it because it is going to do little for you
anyways.

You may have "disabled" it by closing it, but it is still activated in the Startup, thus the error. Go here
Start/Run/type msconfig and click OK. Click the Startup tab and uncheck/disable the files starting with NA
click Apply and OK. Now reboot your PC.

That still leaves it set to start up again at reboot - which is where
the Setup will have trouble with it. You have to uninstall it, and
either get an independent means of reinstalling, or get a different
package. There are good free ones like AVG or Kapersky lite. It is
quite likely that the version you have running on 98 is not compatible
with XP anyway
