can't upgrade to XP home version

R

Randy

Well, thanks microsoft,I spent $107.00 for the XP home
upgrade and it won't install on my new P4 pc.
The first attemp, I inserted disk and
selected "upgrade",installation commenced until the black
screen with the win logo came up, then a blue screen
message "window has detected a virus on your computer"
then os would not reboot back to Win98SE.
So then to get comp. operating again I had to reinstall my
first original 98 disk, then my 98se upgrade disk.

The second attempt,I inserted disk and selected "clean
install", once again everything went fine all the way to a
black screen with winlogo then blue screen again
with "window has detected a virus on your computer".

I run current versions of Norton but I did switch off the
antivirus programs before installation attempts.

Anyone want to buy a upgrade disk?

Boot to the xp cd (don't insert when in windows), format the drive, and
install xp. (the xp cd setup program does all this for you, just boot to
it).

On your 2nd attempt did you format your disk before doing the clean install?
That should have gotten rid of any viruses. Might be something to try.

That definetely sounds like a hardware issue. Did you check the HCL to make
sure all your hardware is compatible with XP?

Do you have virus detection (Trend Chipaway?) turned on in the BIOS?

Unless you object, you can do a clean install with that upgrade CD by
rebooting your PC with the XP CD, reformating your partition and continue
with the install. You'll be prompted sometime during the install to insert
your qualifying prior version (98SE or 98 CD). This may not be the way you
want to go knowing you would have to spend the time reinstalling all your
apps and reconfiguring them, but it is an option.

.
I have done everything suggested in reply above, the only
other thing that might be the problem is there might be a
virus in the Master boot record, but I don't know how to
delete the MBR or if when I fdisk/reformat the hdd if
that deletes the mbr. Faster Cleaner upgrade, what a joke.

Yes, fdisk and format, that will get rid of any possible virus. If you still
get the error after that, then it's your hardware that's causing the
problem.

fdisk /mbr restores the master boot record to its original state.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards,
RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
