When attempting to begin my upgrade from MS Windows 98SE I
get a message that I am running Norton Anti-Virus and the
upgrade will not proceed. I have disabled Norton, checked
and double checked, but I still get the error message.

My Norton program was a part of my basic setup when I
purchased my computer and I do not have a separate
installation disk. I have been paying the annual fee to
keep it current, but I do not have any way to uninstall
and then reinstall because when I run the setup disk it
will also reinstall Windows 98.

Is there anyway around this without uninstalling Norton
and buying a new copy? As I said, I have disabled it, but
still get the error message.

Or, after uninstalling Norton, and successfully installing Windows XP, go
to:

http://www.grisoft.com

and download and install the FREE version of AVG Antivirus 6. Many,
including myself have been using AVG with Windows XP for a couple of years.
My new system has a 90 day free trial of Norton, and I can't believe how
bloated it's become. It's really a system, hog. AVG isn't, and my clients
who use AVG have had zero infections, while the same can't be said for the
ones who use Norton. I suspect that you didn't use the Upgrade Adviser on
the Windows XP CD, or you would have known to uninstall Norton. To avoid
any other surprises about Windows XP incompatibles with your software and
hardware, I suggest that you run the Windows XP Upgrade Adviser BEFORE
attempting to upgrade again.
