Upgrade help please....

Hi, I've attempted to install XP home on my mothers PC but have come across
a couple of glitches. The PC has a Cyrix 6x86MX Processor, 233MHz & 96 MB of
ram with a Socket 7 motherboard. Not Much I know but with a 8gig HD it did
install XP. PC had previously ran Win98 since 1999. At first all seemed ok
except no sound or modem.

In System/Hardware/Device Manager I get the following:
-CMI8330/C3D Audio Adapter (Code28)
Drivers not installed
(I get the above x4)

-Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem (Code 10)
Drivers cannot start

All the original driver discs are for Win95/98/NT. One of which is the
Systemboard disc containing PC CHillin 98. I recently upgraded my PC's
motherboard and was supplied with same disc however the 2002 edition.

Not looking for the computer to do wonders as Mum will only use it to surf
web and print out pics. Any advice would be welcome.

Regards,
Rod

Basically your pc is to slow and old. Yes it does meet the
basic bare requirements but if you can get it to install
on your system your gonna be more then a little frustrated
at the performance(which will be slower then a snail
because almost all of your resources will be used just to
run windows not the tasks your trying to use).
Best thing to do if you want your mother to have windows
xp is go buy a new machine.

The only thing you can do is check the manufacturers of the various
components you're having trouble with and see if they have XP drivers.

And since you asked for "any" advice :) Windows XP will never run
satisfactorily on this computer with it's present hardware. Spending money
to upgrade it would be a waste. Mum and the computer will be much happier
with 98.

The pc is well below the hardware spec for XP to run decently.. reload Win
98 or go buy a new pc that will handle XP.. Win 98 is well able to surf and
print..

Thanks for the replies. Surprisingly I found that XP was running quite
smoothly. I even hooked up my own broadband connection and web surfing was
no problem either. Found some drivers for the audio adapter but no joy with
the modem. Apparently Motorola did not and will never do xp drivers. I'll
try the audio drivers and find another modem then let you all know how I get
on. Thanks again.

P.S. Failing that can anyone reccomend a suitable cheap replacement for the
Socket 7 motherboard that could just occupy the same space.

Hello again. I did it. Really chuffed with meself. I used what was
apparently a Win2000 driver for the modem and that worked. Also audio
drivers worked. XP is certainly running faster than the Win98 version so
far...

that's just the basics - you try running Word and printing and then see if
you're satisfied...

Well I've yet to plug in the printer but I've played some home video,
music and played around with the photo album with no problems. Certainly
some of the graphics are not as smooth as my own machine but then again I
dont think Mum will be too worried about that. As for word I have loaded
Supreme Office Suite and this works fine for simple acconts and letter
writing. So far so good....

Just one more thing.....as the machine is not running Word can anyone
reccomend a free program that will allow the use of spell check? Many thanks
for all the replies. Good to see there are some helpful folk left in the
world...

====================
An excellent FREE program with a spellcheck is "Cetus CWord Pad." Google it
as I don't have the URL anymore.
