Upgrade gone haywire

I upgrades/updated my Windows 98 SE with Windows XP. I lost all my settings,
my desktop, my F1-F12 keys no longer work, most applications had to be
reinstalled and some of them still do not work. It will not let me roll back
to the previous version of Windows. Very few programs are even listed in my
Add/Remove Programs and worst of all I upgraded to fix my IE which had quit
working and I could not backup anything because the hard drive was full and
there are not enough floppies in the world to back up a 6 GB hard drive. As
you know there are no system restore on Windows 98 SE and I don't think it
would help anyways. And I cannot format to NTFS. Don't even have the option.
Normal Windows XP is far from normal and the screen resolution is awful even
set at the highest settings. It said I had two displays which I do not. Only
one is showing but I think it is affecting the resolution.

I see you're back again :)

After upgrading you visited your mobo site and installed chipset and other
drivers?
You did the same for your graphics device?

6GB is way too small for a winxp installation, if you intend to install much
in the way of apps

You may have wanted to upgrade, but it sounds like you performed a clean install instead. If your hard drive was full, you would not have enough room to perform an upgrade to XP.

You need to start installing XP compatible drivers for all of the hardware on the system like Video card, keyboard, (if this is a third party keyboard) Sound Card, etc, and checking the compatibility of the software you are installing.

If you did indeed install this on a 6GB hard drive, like you mentioned, you might be better off to purchase a larger hard drive now and reinstall XP before you reinstall everything. 6GB will fill up very fast on an XP system.

It is on a laptop I bought for two purposes only. (1) to use a small bible
program and (2) to watch DVD in my DVD drive. I have no intentions of using
it as a regular computer. That is what my desktop is for. It was bought
instead of a handheld Franklin Bible because this program I have has a
lexicon. I don't need any other software. I just want my old desktop settings
and the like back.

You wont get them back if your upgrade went wrong.

I'd suggest your only option is a clean install of winxp, after which
obtaining chipset and other drivers from the Laptop manu site
