I am in the process of upgrading one XP Home Edition (Dell Laptop) to XP Pro.
I insert the CD-ROM and click on install windows. I receive the following
message:
Setup cannot continue because the version of windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD.

Has anyone run across this before? Help!!!

Hi

That error message would suggest that the XP CD you are trying to install
from is an earlier version of XP than is already installed. What version of
XP is installed now? The cause may be laptop specific - have a look at the
documentation that came with the laptop.

You have SP2 installed on the current version of Windows Home. You need to
slipstream SP2 into the version you are trying to upgrade to.

Google for "Slipstream". A very useful tool is "Autostreamer".

It appears SP2 is currently installed in the XP Home version.

Unless SP2 is integrated into XP Pro, then one cannot
upgrade an existing XP Home w/SP2 installation using
a non-SP2 version of XP Pro. What you need to do is
create a SP2 "slipstreamed" version of XP Pro, then use
the new CD to upgrade over XP Home w/SP2.

You have two options:

1. Uninstall SP2 from XP Home, then upgrade to XP Pro.

or

2. Create a SP2 slipstreamed version of XP Pro (preferred)
and use the new XP Pro w/SP2 to upgrade.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Note: If you have a preinstalled version of Windows XP Home with SP2,
then you cannot uninstall SP2. You'll have to make a XP Pro CD with SP2
slipstreamed in order to upgrade over your existing XP Home installation.

Carey (or anyone), I would appreciate your opinion of the following proposed
solution of doing the slipstream upgrade (without having to make a bootable CD).
I am assuming that the current XP Home SP2 installation is virus / spyware free.
I thought this would be an option for people that do not have a CD Burning program
that supports creating bootable CD's or just plain don't have a CDRW drive.
I guess that nifty AutoStreamer (v 1.0.29) would answer the first concern.

A. Open Windows Explorer (right click on My Computer and then click on Explore)
Click on TOOLS and then FOLDER OPTIONS, then click on the VIEW TAB
Set to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
Also take the checks out of
HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES, and
HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES (recommended)
(click Yes that you really want to do this when you get the warning)
Click APPLY and OK at the bottom

B. Follow just the first 3 steps from the following web site:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

C. Temporarily turn off any Anti Virus program
Temporarily turn off any third-party firewall program
Turn on the Windows Firewall

D. Connect to the Internet
Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in the following command and click OK
c:\xp\i386\winnt32.exe
Click on Install
Click Next for "Upgrade Recommended"
Click Yes to getting Updated Setup Files
Follow instructions to complete the upgrade process
Once upgrade to XP Pro SP2 is complete,
make sure your Anti Virus and Firewall are turned back on.
