Upgrade from Windows ME

After purchasing a new hard drive, I know I have two
options. Initially I can install Windows ME on the new
hard drive and perform an upgrade to XP Home Edition, or
can I do a direct installation of XP to the new hard drive-
when XP asks for a valid full version operating system, I
can insert Windows ME at the appropriate time and continue
with the installation. Which option is valid?
