Upgrading from Windows XP Home to Windows XP Pro

Hi,

I just bought a laptop that Office 2003 running on Windows XP Home. I
have my own copy of Windows XP Pro - the full CD not the upgrade
version.

Can I run this CD on top of Windows XP Home and will it do the
necessary upgrade?

I don't want to reinstall Office or any of the installed HP apps -
Rhapsody, PhotoSmart, etc, so whacking the hard drive and doing a fresh
install is not really an appealing option.

Thanks,
Anuj

If your Windows XP Pro CD is a full retail version (meaning it
came in a blue box with the CD key printed on a folder) then
the answer is yes. Start the installation from within XP Home
and choose the Upgrade option.

If you have an OEM version (it came in a shrink wrapped package
with the CD key on a sticker that is supposed to be affixed to
the computer) then the answer is no. An OEM CD can only be used
to perform a clean installation.

As with any procedure which makes major changes to your
operating system, backup all your important files. Also, make
sure you have all the CD's and installation keys for your
installed software. Bottom line is be prepared before something
goes wrong with the upgrade.

Just out of curiosity, assuming you have a full retail XP
Professional CD, why would you want to use a product that, last
time I checked, costs $299 when you can purchase an upgrade CD
for $99 after rebates? Combine that with the fact that your XP
Home license can't be used on another computer, this sounds
like an awfully expensive way to install XP Pro on your laptop.

Microsoft specifically states "thier is no upgrade from xp
home to xp pro"

If it's not asking too much, Andrew, could you point out
exactly where Microsoft states this? I must have missed the
Knowledge Base article that contains that statement. If you
can't produce any documentation to support your bogus advice,
I'd suggest you STFU!

Also, if it's not asking too much, could you pass along a
definition of the word "thier"? My spell checker just choked on
it and I was curious to know it's meaning and origin. I'm
familiar with there, their and they're but thier is a new one
on me.

Thanks for your anticipated cooperation.

The "upgrade" advise from the 1st response simply is not
correct.....Microsoft specifically states "thier is no upgrade from
xp home to xp pro",the "upgrade"
is for older windows OS..To install pro from home, one must boot to
xp pro cd, select, install xp,new copy, delete the partition (xp
home),create one, then xp formats and performs a clean
installation.....

Andrew,

When you get one wrong (like this one) the first time - and it is proven to
you that it was the incorrect assumption - repeating it over and over does
not make it true.

Examples of your incorrect statement - over and over:
http://snipurl.com/s45j

The same answer I continue to give to prove to you that your assumption is
completely and totally false:

Andrew E. has been incorrect about this many times - but refuses (or perhaps
cannot comprehend) the fact that upgrading from Windows XP Home to Windows
Professional is supported and one of the easiest paths to follow.

Windows XP supported upgrade paths
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607

That article clearly shows a path from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP
Professional Edition..
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607#XSLTH3140121123120121120120

Even external (non-Microsoft sponsored) confirm this:

What are the supported upgrade paths to Windows XP?

It would be nice - if just once - you responded to a rebuttal of your
incorrect answer and told us why you believe what you believe.

Also - for the cut 'n paste incorrect answer - spell-check it at least. =)
What is really interesting is that your spelling 'mistake' is in your
supposed Microsoft *quote*.

He won't tell you, he won't tell anyone where he got this stupid notion
of his that Windows XP Home cannot be upgraded to XP Professional. He
has been corrected on many occasions by many different persons on this
but he refuses to accept the facts. On many occasions well meaning
individuals have posted many different links from Microsoft refuting his
bogus posts but he refuses to read and comprehend any of the Microsoft
information provided. The only thing that I can think of is that he
read information concerning Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and he's
too dense to know the difference.
