I have a P450 with 128MB of memory. Can I upgrade from
Windows 98 to Windows XP Home?

You can, but I would get more memory first. 128mb of pc133 ram isn't going
to cut it in xp.

Sam

Nobody can advise you without knowing your system setup and all of the
software/hardware that is involved. Upgrading to a new OS, especially XP,
from a 9x system is a change that affects every component on the computer.

I recommend that you do your homework first and do not get in a hurry to
upgrade. These newsgroups are full of messages from folks who did not do
this.

Number one is to get the XP Upgrade Advisor and run it: This will identify
possible incompatible components on the system. Get it here:

Description of the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307726

Number two is to get a good solid overview of the upgrade process:

Article by Gary Woodruff:
Upgrading to XP: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Make sure that you have checked the manufacturers websites for new, XP
compatible drivers and updates for all installed hardware and software
components, especially display and sound card drivers. Have all of these new
drivers/updates ready to install when you perform the upgrade. Perform a
complete backup of all important data that you cannot afford to lose.

Yes, but it will be a little slow. Doubling the amount of RAM
would provide a noticeable improvement.

You can, but the cost of a much faster system preloaded with XP would
possibly be comparable in price; if you need to replace hardware and update
software. You could keep the current system and network the two into a home
LAN.

You probably can. But to be sure, run the Microsoft Upgrade
Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp.

However, with only 128MB of RAM, performance is likely to be very
poor. How much you should have depends on what apps you run, but
most people running common office applications don't start to see
good performance without at least 256MB.

You really need more memory than that. Although it is 'recommended' it
is in practice desperately short. I ran XP happily enough in the Betas
with a P3 450 and 192MB, but without imposing too many programs loaded
at once - in your position I would look to upgrade to 256, or else stay
put

512 MB of RAM is being suggested for most serious gamer PCs now.
