Upgrade from Window 2000 to XP "ASMS" Problem

I am trying to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP professional. I
am getting the follwoing error:-

The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed. Type the
path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy files from: GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386

I have tried to follow the recommendations in :-

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311755&Product=winxp

I have an NTFS system so the FAT section is irrelevant.

Method 1 - I do not have regedit.exe on the system
Method 2 - I cannot boot the system so that I can see bot the CD and
the hard disk.
Method 3 - I am using a retail version.

I have read many posts on this matter. I have tried 3 different cd
drives.

As mention often in the forums I want to try to copy to the i386
directory onto my hard disk and install from there. I have created a
Windows 98 SE boot disk (from http://www.bootdisk.com/). But when I
boot from this I cannot see either the CD drive or my hard disk
drives.

I have a Compaq system so I am not sure if this is related to the
current post: "compaq presario 7478 will not recognize cd drive".

Does anyone have any further suggestions on how to complete my
installation. If not how do I revert to my previous Windows 2000
system. Currently when I boot I automatically go to the installation
window and the "ASMS" problem.

Thanks for the help.

William thanks for the reply. I have tried to boot from the floppy disks, but
this did not solve the problem. Booting using the floppies gave me the same
options as if booting from the CD which I can do.

There are 3 options that are given
1. To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
2. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recover Console, press R
3. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

Trying option 1 gets me back to the problems trying to find the ASMS
directory.

I tried option 2 to recover the installation. After logging in as
administrator I then get to a command prompt. I tried to use xcopy to copy
I386 directory from CD to local hard disk. However, the list of available
commands are limited and xcopy is not available. I can see the 2 local hard
drives from the command line. I can also see xcopy in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32. I
think that fundementally my problem is that the installation cannot see the
CD driver at this point.

I hoped that Option 3 would revert me back to Windows 2000 but it does not.
On a reboot it goes back into the install sequence and gets stuack trying to
find the "ASMS" directory again.

Any advice please on how to progress the install to XP or to revert back to
Windows 2000. At the moment I have a PC that is of no use.

Thanks,
Brian
