Hello all,

i am running a dell dimension 4550 windows xp home edition which was
updated with service pack two(but only have original xp home CD no
service pack)

i just recently had the hal.dll mising or corrupt problem, copyed hal
and another dll to the computer, then it said the kernel needed more
dlls, i did a repair install and now im running into the problem of
asms needed. I have the XP cd which may possibly be scuffed in the area
where asms is located or perhaps my cd drive isnt striking when it
should, though it does boot from it if i want to go to the recovery
console. the main problem is when im prompted to enter the xp cd for
asms my keyboard and mouse arent recognized. what options do i have
that wont put my data at risk? will a usb keyboard be recognized? im
using a ps2 keyboard. expand and copy wont let me get asms from the D:
should i just create a set of floppy boot discs? thanks for the help.
it will be much appreciated.

thanks for responding again, im unsure of what route i should take on
this page, some of this might be a little past me, which files are the
ones i should copy to floppy or cd and what will these files help me
accomplish? will they let me load dos take the boot cd out of the drive
and put in another so i can copy the asms folder i need? im a bit lost,
and let me also add because i noticed i neglected to say that my
computer goes to a screen saying its continuing the installation of
windows which is when im prompted for ASMS should that even happen if i
did a repair installation? are my files in documents and settings lost
anyway? thanks again

A quick reply:

A repair install wil not destroy user data. So if you can continue you can
try it.

The bootable CD (Bart PE) might let you get to the user data u want to save
guard so you might try to copy those to USB disk, thumb drive, floppy ...

Booting to dos from CD can work when you can put the needed file from
another medium (floppy, usb ...).

You can download XCopy tools online if needed, just google for it ...

Good luck

just a few more questions, i downloaded the bart to cd but my computer
wont boot from it, and i can copy files from floppy, such as xcopy.exe
but there is no run or install command in the recovery console and i
cant copy the .cab files because the recovery console doesnt support
wildcards any suggestions?

How many files do you need to copy, so many that you can not copy them by
name ?

Also the BartPE cd, you created a bootable CD but it doesn't boot? I 've
never had that happen and I do not know how you did it, I expect that you PC
BIOS is set to boot from CD, if not this will not work.

You followed the instructions below when creating the CD?

Best regards

This section will help you create a BartPE CD quickly.

1.. Download the latest self-installing package of PE Builder and install
it. See the Download section on this page.

2.. Start PE Builder (pebuilder.exe). At the main PE Builder dialog, enter
the source path to your original Windows XP/2003 Installation/Setup CD. You
can use the "..." button to navigate. If your Windows XP is not integrated
with service pack 1 or 2, you must slipstream your files first.
Please read Slipstreaming files from the help files to do this.

3.. At the main PE Builder dialog, enable the "Create ISO image" and "Burn
to CD" option. Select your CD writer device from the Device listbox.
If you use a CDRW media, also check the "Erase CDRW" option.

4.. At the main PE Builder dialog, hit the "build" button (or press F7).
PE Builder will now ask you to create a directory, answer with "yes".

5.. The license for your Windows XP/2003 product is shown. Read it and
agree to it to continue.

6.. PE Builder will now start building BartPE. This will take a few
minutes.
You will see a lot of files getting copied and/or decompressed, the ISO
image build and the data recorded to your CD writer.
While burning to your CD writer you will not see any screen changes, just
wait for it to finish...

7.. When burned OK, boot from the CD!

I'm happy that you've been able to get it sorted out. Reagato is a nice tool
indeed. You've come a long way during this!

Cheers
