Upgrade from Win 95 to Win XP Pro

Hi every one, my experience in IT is limited and like most every one, I try
to learn and understand. My question is this????
I recently upgraded on my lap top from Win 95 to Win XP pro full version and
all seemed fine until the end. I am now getting a message that says...
Missing <windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Would any one out there have any suggestions on what to do next and recover
my system. I understand that the Win XP is a bootable disc but it does not
seem to take. Appreciate the help if any one can offer suggestiions, Thanks.

Since there is no supported upgrade path from Windows 95
to Windows XP, it would be best to begin again
and perform a "clean install" of Windows XP.
Afterward, visit the support web site of the
manufacturer of your laptop and download any
available hardware drivers designed for Windows XP
and your specific laptop make and model.

Upgrading Windows 95 to Windows XP is not supported.
However, the Windows 95 CD is a supported "qualifying media" for the clean
installation using an Upgrade edition of Windows XP.
