Upgrade from 2000 Pro to XP Pro

Set-up states that it does not support an upgrade from 2000 Pro to XP Pro,
it will only let me do a New Installation. Will I lose EVERYTHING on the PC
if I do the new install?

I need the upgrade to run certian modules of Microsoft Great Plains on the
machine and was told that I had to have the full-version rather than an
upgrade version.

That *is* a supported upgrade. If your CD doesn't let you do
that, it's because yours is an OEM version. OEM versions can only
do clean installations.

Yes.

Two points:

1. You were told wrong. You can do an upgrade with either an
Upgrade version or a Full version. You can also do a clean
installation with either. The two are identical except for the
criteria for their use. The Upgrade version requires that you own
a previous qualifying version.

2. You bought neither the Full version nor the Upgrade version.
You bought an OEM version.

Whoever told you that you needed the full version versus an upgrade
version of XP Pro is wrong. There is no difference between the two
except that the full version does not require proof of a previous
qualifying version of Windows in order to install. You just wasted
around $100 for the full version whereas you could use the upgrade
instead.

If possible, return the full version and exchange it for the upgrade
version. A new install of XP Pro will overwrite everything and you
will lose all your data from Win2000 Pro.

A Full retail copy of XP Pro will do an upgrade if you run the CD from
the existing system. It sounds as if you have got one of the 'OEM'
ones, sold with a bit of hardware at a lower price and marked 'for
supply only with a new computer' or similar wording. These will only
install 'clean' (and are also tied to the machine and may not later be
transferred to another)
