Upgrade from 2000 - boots to blank screen

In upgrading a PC from 2000pro to XPpro SP2 I got a crash message saying
setup cant continue and when I try to boot I get a blank splash screen.
Each reboot then tries to continue install with the result- an empty
screen

I tried F8 and safe mode- same thing. Is there any recovery method to
go back to previous OS which was working?

I guess you could try a win2k repair installation, but it might be a
question of how far your upgrade went.
(I hope data is backed up)
