Upgrade from win2k to xp incomplete due to cdrom failure

I was in the process of upgrading from win2k to xp professional when
the DVD drive I was using crashed with an i/o error. There was about
37 minutes left in the installation. Now XP loads to a blank screen
with active mouse. I tried to redo the upgrade from CD, and it appears
to copy the files, but again reloads to the blank screen.

Is there a way reset/delete something so that windows will load the
setup program again upon the reload. I would really like to avoid
backing up the machine to a spare partition and starting from scratch
again.

Starting in safe mode also fails. Trying to boot the old win2k system
fails with a missing/incorrect hal.dll.

Thanks,
Paul

Usually a failed xp install corrupts the OS files on the hd.You can, boot to xp
cd,select,install xp,new copy,delete the partition,create one,then xp formats
& does a clean install (prefered).Or,wipe the hd,reinstall 2k,upgrade to
xp...
