Upgrading a laptop from W98 to W2000 Pro. Setup proceeds
normally until the "final" screen/steps in which it
updates the Registry. Then it freezes. Same result 2
times.

Is there any way I can get setup through this point, or am
I going to have to resort to a clean install?

You might consider following the proper procedure to upgrade from Win98 to
W2K.

First, verify your hardware compliance. This entails a compatible bios, a
minimum hardware requirement and collecting drivers for those peripherals
that aren't W2k compliant.

The same is true for software. A utility that isn't W2K compatible or
doesn't support ntfs will probably fail to execute (there is a possible
workaround: slayerui.dll).

Try running "winnt32 /checkupgradeonly" found in W2K CD's I386 directory
while in Win98. It creates an exhaustive log file in your Windows directory
describing possible issues.

As with any upgrade scenario, a far better solution is to perform a clean
install. Upgrade paths should only be considered when large organisations
have numerous systems to upgrade, dealing with the bugs is more effective
than installing each system from scratch.
